Presenting, Training and Facilitation

**HOT OFF THE PRESSES!** After delivering my Maths Comm talk twice to accumulative audience of 1400 A Level Students at Maths in Action and having this roaring reaction: www.tiktok.com/@7568872947172475926/video/7641907962629360918
The next version of the A Mathematician Offers You a Cuppa… debuted at Pint of Science in May 2026 and is available in full on YouTube: youtu.be/T7tUu_XFNIE?si=LLrK1pvpHkMJvDC5

In sharing Science, Maths and all the wonderful and weird things I’ve learnt over the years, I’ve given talks, demonstrated science, crafted workshops, delivered training, organised international conferences, facilitated idea days, masterclasses and workshops, as well as chaired important discussions. Here are some of the highlights!

Facilitation:
I facilitate workshops, masterclasses and event days including idea days to bring together researchers and partners to find new opportunities and plan first steps for projects.

Notably, I facilitated CDT FORT Ideas Lab 2026 to brainstorm and review potential summer projects for the new CDT researchers in collaboration with senior academics and industry partners.

Training:
I run interactive STEM-Improv workshops in my communications training in which techniques and practices from applied improv theatre are practised to develop attendees presentation and teamwork skills whilst building confidence and community.

For several years, I provided training alongside career trainer Justine Jones to run a 10 week Maths communication course at the Mary Lister McCammon Research Fellowship for woman in mathematics. Each cohort ranged from 13 to 16 undergraduate students tasked with creating outreach talks from scratch. The course included STEM-Improv workshops, and science communication skills masterclasses. Many Alumni of this program have gone on to achieve PhD scholarships and acclaim in the presentations.

I created and facilitated on several occasions the interactive Masterclass: What I wishes I knew about PhD applications to information about PhD applications, where to find them, how to apply and what to expect, alongside exclusive anecdotes from PhD students and Mary Lister McCammon alumni I had collected over years. Sharing my own and other alumni’s stories and advice went far in giving the participants confidence in creating effective PhD applications, and indeed, many participants went on to achieve funded PhDs.

I was invited by oSTEM LGBTQ+ and You Conference team to run a LGBTQ+ STEM-Improv workshop at their 2026 conference.

I have run alongside Mathematician Kat Phillips (Kat does Maths) an Improv and Streaming workshop for professional science communicators, bringing together the theory behind live-presenting skills with improv exercises to practice them.

I have also provided one-to-one presentation consultation for both science/mathematics out reach talks and for full seminar presentations aimed at a conference audience.

Presenting:
My favourite form of science communication is speaking at events, public engagement and presentations.
I have spoken numerous times at international conferences, invited seminars, symposiums, public events and for online networks. I have gone out of my way to discuss quantum mechanics in one-to-one conversations with the public in fun and creative ways.

In 2025 I debuted my comedy Maths-Comm/Data Science talk “The Decision Tea Tree” at Maths in Action talk to a collective 1350 A Level Students! Reception was strong, receiving plenty of audience “gasps!”, applause and even a suspenseful “Oooo….” as I revealed a plot twist.

One of my favourite talks come from Pint of Science where I engage with a sold-out audience in the whimsical talk: “Playing Billiards at the Quantum Pub”. Full recorded, with surprise technical difficulties and smoothly improvised endings included, I shared with the audience a totally legitimate moving object I studied in my PhD… the billiard. The billiard is what you find in any British pub in the form of a rectangular table, however, make the shape stranger than a square and you get chaos! Sounds messy? Well what if I said I don’t just look at billiards as we know it, but instead I looked at… quantum billiards. Watch for more:

I love talking about maths, physics and quantum in some mutual language that fosters a fun and warm environment in which we can all learn. It’s also why I go out my way to train, so every scientist is equipped with communication skills can share the beauty of what they know with anyone.

I have also collaborated with Sarah Cosgriff and demonstrated Asexual-Aromantic themed Science Demonstrations at the Royal Institution and given a key note talk on Asexual-Aromantic-Agender people in STEM at the Proud Science Alliance.

Chairing and Organising:

Shortly after joining the Aces in STEM network in 2021, I created, hosted and organised the symposium: Speed Science. The objective was to bring together the diverse community of academics, students and science-inclined members to share their scientific passions. The event hosts a dozen members to give 5-minute presentations on their interests aimed towards a lay audience. For several students, this was their first science communication talk. Since the establishment of Speed Science, it has run three more times, each to a positive reception.

I have also organised and chaired a 3-day international academic workshop on non-Hermitian Optical Wave Guides during my role as a research assistant. The workshop brought together 11 speakers to give illuminating seminars on their work and provide the opportunity to network. The workshop received excellent feedback.

I have also organised and chaired for LGBTQ+ STEM Networks. For more visit LGBTQ+ Activism.
